Tips I would tell my younger self!

Writing Tips!

  • Continue to write and send poems out to be (possibly) published, don’t wait until the fear of rejection goes away. You will always have that fear and it’s common to experience rejection.
  • Read Stephen King’s memoir On Writing, or your favorite author’s memoir about their publishing experience. It’s inspiring to read another author or poet’s experience trying to get noticed.
  • Major in creative writing; if you truly love writing, study it. Don’t just study it while you’re in school either.
  • Read as often as you can and as much as you can.
  • Write as often as you read! What you write doesn’t have to be good but continue to read!

Life Tips!

  • Do research on the companies you apply to. Don’t just apply to a job because a friend works there. Just because it’s a “good fit” for your friend doesn’t mean the job will be a good fit for you.
  • Step out of your comfort zone! I know this is super cliche, but it’s true! Go do something you wouldn’t normally do; it doesn’t have to be parachuting or anything crazy like that. Just try something you wouldn’t normally do!
    • Lately, I’ve been trying to break out of my comfort zone by meeting my friends in the city. I have taken the train into Manhattan multiple times but generally with another person, so it’s not within my comfort zone to take the train myself. As anxious as it makes me, I always get in and out of the city safely.
  • Continue to take photos excessively while living in the moment as much as possible. For some, that might seem contradictory, but memories are important, and photos are the best way to preserve your memories (in my opinion). After I lost my dad, the photos I have from the time we had together are precious to me, and I am so happy I have them.
