Writing as a Form of Healing

Every writer knows how therapeutic writing down difficult emotions can be. This became very clear after I lost my dad suddenly. The only way I could express my grief, without sobbing uncontrollably, was by writing poems about it. Writing about my anger, guilt, and sadness helped keep these feelings from weighing me down. Instead of drowning from my grief, I was able to process my emotions and finish my undergraduate degree without any hiccups.

Sometimes, there are feelings that seem too daunting to discuss right away. Writing about them in a journal, poem, or a piece of fiction can help you start to process these big emotions and begin your healing journey (if one is needed). In this format, any thoughts that come up will not be judged for being too harsh. I find that sometimes when I am too angry or sad to have a conversation about my feelings in the moment, if I write them out on paper, I will be able to effectively communicate how I feel in a nicer way (instead of snapping and possibly saying the wrong thing). Writing down your feelings helps you rationalize what your feeling and why.
