I have a strange fascination with books related to the history of The Plague and its three strain, bubonic (the black plague), pneumonic, and septicemic. It isn’t just non-fiction pieces that intrigue me, but also historical fiction pieces that take place during the time of the plague. I believe my fascination started when I found out a couple had eaten a plague infested rodent towards the end of 2019, became sick and sadly passed away from the disease, if caught in time can be cured by modern medicine. Looking back, this seems like a bad omen for what was to come a few months later in 2020, but I could just be very superstitious.
When I learned about The Plague, it always seem as though it was a disease we defeated and had no idea that it was a disease we could still contract and so the idea of a couple catching it and not making it surprised me. Now, I find it fascinating, in a eerie way, find it interesting to learn about the history of it and why it is called the plague and the black death, how people dealt with the pandemic without modern medicine, and the current rates of the disease. Even though I’m not even close to a medical professional and cannot treat myself or anyone else with it, I can’t help but eat up historical books about it.
If anyone knows of any historical fiction or nonfiction novels that discuss the plague, please comment!
